Around 50 automobiles have been smeared with what appears to be human blood in the Germany's municipality of Hanau close to Frankfurt, police confirm authorities.
Cars, building surfaces and postboxes were vandalized, occasionally with prohibited symbols, they stated in a release.
Law enforcement report they were notified late on Wednesday evening, when a individual discovered that a automobile in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been marked with a reddish substance.
The liquid had been drawn in the shape of a Nazi symbol, they added.
Law enforcement then discovered numerous other marked automobiles and building exteriors in the surrounding area.
Swastikas are prohibited in Germany under laws banning the visible presentation of symbols from the Nazi era.
Police say preliminary tests suggest the liquid was probably blood from a person.
"At present there remains no indication as to its origin; officials are not yet informed of any harm in relation with the event," they added.
Local authorities said they were attempting "to resolve the mystery" and have requested to the community for details.
A senior representative commented the incident rendered him stunned and required to be resolved rapidly.
"This event hits the core of Hanau and reawakens the pain of the extremist violent incident five years ago," he wrote on social media, mentioning the murder of nine individuals by a gunman targeting residents of immigrant origin in five years prior.
